Grade 8's have had an awesome start to the year in maths investigating integers, indices, and solving problems. The next unit students will be investigating is fractions and decimals as well as practical applications of percentages.
Thursday 14th of March is International Day of Mathematics. Students had the opportunity to play with mathematical origami at lunchtime. See if you can solve some of the problems in the poster below!
This term Grade 7 students have began their unit on fractured fairytales. In this unit students will examine the different elements of fairytales and how they can be altered to provide us with a different take on a traditional story.
Students have been encouraged to share their work with their fellow classmates, and will have the opportunity to show their creative side later in the unit through writing their own fractured fairytale.
In Term 1, Grade 10 have been studying Chemistry. The focus for the first few weeks was for students to learn how to navigate the Periodic Table and understand the reactivity of metals and non-metals.
The second half of the unit will focus on chemical reactions. Assignments for the Periodic Table are currently being completed.
Students in Grade 7 are still exploring their Introduction to Ancient History unit where they have been learning about various civilisations. Students have participated in class readings, research tasks and watching documentaries, most recently Iceman Murder Mystery, about Otzi the Iceman.
Otzi is the name of an ancient man from 3300BCE whose body was mummified by Ice, preserving his body better than any other human remains found from the time.
Students have been using a note taking strategy called Cornell note taking when watching this documentary. These notes have assisted in writing their first PEEL paragraph (Point, example. Explanation, Link), as we came up with several theories as to how Otzi might have died and what that might tell us today about people or civilisations at the time.
We have begun looking at inquiry questions, understanding the difference between simple short answer questions and questions that require several sources of research and deeper critical thinking. Students have been coming up with their own inquiry questions which will lead to a research task, where they are able to choose their own topic to research and design their own inquiry question to answer.
On Wednesday 13 March, 38 students across grade 10/11/12 participated in the Exploring Education Pathways (EEP) run by The Smith Family at both University campuses in Launceston.
The aim of the program is for the students to engage with staff from the university to learn about their pathway options and student life post-secondary school as they set out to make decisions around subject selections and career pathways.
The aim of the AMC and UTAS event is to:
- Provide an opportunity for students to come to campus and experience some of the facilities at AMC / UTAS
- Showcase the careers on offer to graduates of AMC
- De-mystify the university experience through informal and formal conversations with UTAS staff and student ambassadors.
Overall, our students were respectful, attentive and followed all instructions all day and we were very pleased with behaviour throughout the day.
We look forward to providing our students further career pathway learning opportunities throughout the course of 2024.

We have had another busy and exciting fortnight at the Q.
Mrs Pooley and Mr Innes took their Outdoor Education classes to Mt Cameron for an overnight camp. The first group left on Monday and returned on Tuesday, as planned. The second group set out on Thursday and returned on Thursday, not as planned! Unfortunately fires in the area forced the camp to be cancelled. I commend both Mrs Pooley, Mr Innes and all the students involved on this camp for the exceptional way they responded so positively to the situation. We hope to reschedule this camp later in the year.
Mrs Frankcombe and Mr Clark have taken Eve, Jack, Caitlin and Alex to Adelaide to compete in the National F1 in School Championships. Currently the group are sitting around the middle of the rankings. They have completed all the presentations to the judges and have 4 races to go. They have had some fantastic learning experiences and met many other students from across the country. We are looking forward to hearing more about their adventures at the competition when they return.
This week NAPLAN testing has begun for our grade 7 and 9 students. There are some FAQs for parents about NAPLAN below. NAPLAN is a compulsory national testing tool and assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular classroom curriculum. You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is part of their school program and to try their best. Please make contact with us if you would like to know more.
Last week you should have received an email for School Association Chairperson Sonia Peck informing the school community of the appointment of Ben Frerk to the position of A/Principal. Ben comes to us from Exter High School where he has been the Principal for 11 years. We look forward to working with Ben and will be warmly welcoming him to The Q on Monday.
Kind regards,
Fran Smyth
A/Principal
The adventure begins at home or around the dinner table when you host an international student.
