Dear Families
All students have now received their interim reports for term 1. These reports are a way to take a quick snapshot of student engagement, organisation and attitude to learning. For some students, reports are a great way to celebrate a positive start to the year. For other students they can provide confirmation that there are opportunities for improvement in some or most learning areas.
For all students however, the most important opportunities from their school reports are the conversations they can have with adults at home about how school is for them, what is working well and what are areas for further growth.
I strongly encourage all parents and carers to have a positive conversation with your child about their learning and how they are progressing this year at Queechy.
Questions like:
- What’s your favourite subject?
- What is working well for you at school this year?
- What are some of your challenges?
- How can we help you to be the best learner you can be?
Our young people are very aware of when learning is working well for them, and when it’s not. As carers it is important to give your children the opportunity to let you know what school is like for them, at the moment, and seek help or support if it is required.
Parent - Teacher
Our Parent - Teacher conversations are a great way to bring some of these conversations back to your child’s teacher. This allows us to work in partnership with home to support student learning to an even higher level. We always suggest bringing your child along to be a part of the conversation if possible.
Our Parent - Teacher session will be in the second week of Term 2, Tuesday 27th April from 3:30-6:45. We are using our online booking system as usual but would like to remind parents that if a teacher you want is unavailable or fully booked please make contact with the school office on 6341 4455 so we can ensure you are able to have a conversation with the teacher concerned. This may be by email, phone, or face to face.
School Association
I warmly welcome any parents to think about joining the
School Association. We meet twice per term and discuss issues important to the running and planning of our school. I highly value the opinions and ideas that we explore at school association meetings.
There is currently a vacant office bearer position, please feel free to contact myself or Committee Chair, Sonia Peck on
0419 309 810.
Warm Regards
Rob Fleming
School Association Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of our School Association will be held at 7pm on Wednesday 24th March in room C30. All parents of students enrolled at Queechy are automatically members and are therefore eligible for office bearer positions or committee member positions.
As our year 10 students prepare to transition to further education or training and leave high school, so too will their parents and community members. Our new year 7’s are just beginning their journey at Queechy, and it is important that new people join the committee to ensure our school association continues.
The tasks associated with the school association are not onerous and are very rewarding. The time commitment is minimal (approximately 3 hours a term). Please obtain a copy of the nomination form at the school office or contact us via our email address queechy.sa@gmail.com for a form or further information. We look forward to seeing you there.

The National Immunisation Program provides free vaccines for students in Year 7 and Year 10.
Consent forms have been sent home and are needed at the Queechy office urgently. If you need a new form, please contact the office (6341 4455) or ask your student to collect one from student window.
If your student isn't receiving an immunisation at school, we still require the consent form to be signed and returned.
Our QHS Student Leaders and staff will be participating in this year's Relay For Life, at St Leonards Athletics Track on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th March. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for the Cancer Council.
Attached is the link to our team page, which also has a button where people can "donate to our team". Thank you to the Queechy High School community who have well and truely exceeded our fundrasing goals. If you would like to also support our fundraising efforts, that would be very much appreciated - your contribution will go to a great organisation and a great cause. Every little bit counts towards helping people who are going through a tough time.

Unfortunately, we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming Grade 9 camp to Paterson’s Island that was due to take place from Wednesday 17th – Friday 19th March.
The decision to cancel the camp was made due to the low return rate of the necessary permission and medical forms by students who indicated that they intended on going; without these permissions we were unable to confirm numbers and proceed with our plans for staffing, bus bookings etc. all of which take a significant amount of planning and organisation, and cannot be done at the last minute.
We understand that many of our students are very disappointed and recognise that significant planning by families has already taken place and we apologise for this inconvenience. Any monies already paid for camp will be fully refunded.
If you have visited us recently, you would be aware that we have a new way for Visitors, Relief Staff and School Guests to check-in. The kiosk is an online check-in system that replaces our sign-in/sign-out books that records visitors we have on-site at Queechy High School. The kiosk is located at the main office.
When you sign you will be asked the following information:
- Working with Vulnerable People registration number (not applicable for Parents)
- Your name and phone number
- Site contact person
- Contractors will be asked for company details
After checking in, please use the Tas Check-In app to complete a COVID-19 visitor screening.
Grade 7/8 - Friday 19 March
Grade 9/10 - Tuesday 23 March
The School Swimming Carnival will be held at the
Launceston Aquatic Centre, commencing at 10:00am and concluding at 2:30pm.
Attendance on the Swimming Carnival Day is compulsory, as is attendance on any other school day. Participation rates are always high as the carnival is designed to give every student multiple chances to get in the water regardless of their swimming ability e.g. novelty events at the shallow end and unlimited water slide use to run alongside traditional races.
Students will be bussed to the pool from QHS at 9.30am and return to school by 2.45pm.
The canteen will operate providing food and refreshments but bringing food and drink is also recommended.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Parents/Guardians are asked not to attend. Thank you for your cooperation.
Consent forms were given to students and were due back Friday 19 February. Please contact the Queechy office if you are requiring a new consent form and hand this back to your Tutor Group as soon as possible.
Basketball Academy has been a success for the start of 2021. We have been focusing on the fundamental skills of basketball. We have started with skills such as dribbling, shooting and defending. This resulted in countless amounts of running, scoring and sore legs from the defensive slides. With a wide range of abilities throughout the academy, there has been great progress for each individual and it has been superb to watch. We are now currently focusing on incorporating these skills to game like scenarios as well as various competitive games. It has been a great start to the year and we look forward to watching each individual grow as a basketballer.
Beauty Therapy - Grade 9/10 Personal Persuit
In our Beauty Therapy lesson we like to DIY beauty products. Last week we made this delicious body scrub using sugar and vanilla.
Below is the recipe we found online - try it out for yourself when you get a minute!
Sugar Body Scrub (by Meg Yonson)
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, lemon or orange zest (optional)
Directions:
- If your coconut oil isn't soft, place into a bowl and heat in the microwave for 10 seconds (until it's just soft, not runny).
- Add sugar in with coconut oil and stir through using a spoon. Add in a dash of vanilla and lemon or orange zest if wish.
- Scoop into a glass jar with a sealable lid and keep in your bathroom for up to two weeks.
- To use: Wet your body with some warm water. Take a small amount of scrub onto your fingers and use to exfoliate your arms and legs. Wash off with warm water.
- Tip: for a face scrub use castor sugar. Do not use lemon or orange zest for a face scrub as it's too acidic for sensitive skin areas like the face.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if Cinderella lived in outback Australia? How would things be different if the wolf didn’t mean to blow down the Three Little Pigs’ houses?
These are just a few of the topics that the Year 7 English classes have been exploring in their Fractured Fairy Tales Unit. Students have had an opportunity to read and view a range of traditional and modern adaptations of fairy tales to understand how they have changed overtime, and how authors make changes to ‘fracture’ the original stories. In the coming weeks, students will be writing their own fractured fairy tales, where they will use their skills and understandings from the unit to write interesting and engaging stories.
This term Grade 8 HaSS students have been exploring the Medieval world. They have been learning about timelines and the various stages of history, as well as looking into Feudalism – how society was constructed along military lines. Students had to create timelines from Medieval Europe as one of their formative assessment pieces. Students were able to research and select ten events they felt were the most important during the period 700CE to 1650CE and write about them in their own words to demonstrate their understanding. Most students created fantastic timelines and spent a lot of time ensuring that they were visually appealing and informative. Students will now be beginning their study of Vikings and are already excited to discover that they didn’t look much like their representations in popular culture. Have a talk with your child when you can to ask them about some of the differences between the representations of Vikings in movies and television and those from historians.
Grade 7 have been working on number and place value. They have consolidated their skills around operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division both mentally and using algorithms. In addition, they have solved larger problems using order of operations. Currently they are completing problems involving integers and how they connect with real-life situations.
Student Absence SMSThe main contact of the student will receive an SMS message if they are an unexplained absence during Tutor Group. If the student arrives after 9:00am and signs in you will still receive the message as they were absent from Tutor Group. Please reply to the message with the child’s name, date, and details of your child’s absence. Parents are required to explain every absence. Parents have the option of messaging the school to advise of explained absences. Can parents please double check that our school SMS number has not been blocked in your phone settings. To avoid receiving an SMS please phone the school on Absent Student Message Bank 6341 4444. |
Road Safety: A reminder to students crossing roads on their way to and from school, to be alert and aware of the dangers when in and around traffic. |
PARKING IN SCHOOL GROUNDSWhen parking in the school grounds, please use the visitor carpark, the parking bays near the visitor carpark or the area next to the tennis courts. Please do not park in the bus parking areas as this space is reserved for buses only and this creates further congestion. Also, a reminder that the disabled park spots are only to be used by permit holders and that permits must be displayed. Due to safety concerns please avoid using the staff car park when dropping off or picking up students. Main Staff Carpark
The main Staff Carpark adjacent the School Office will be closed off every day at 2:30p.m. to reduce congestion and ensure the safety of our students.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra timeThere are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc. When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged. If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is. We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break (1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
