Week 25, Term 3 2019

Welcome back to Term 3 and congratulations to all our students for a positive end to the first half of the year.

It was a pleasure to read all the student reports at the end of last term and sign many Letters of Commendation and Certificates of Academic Excellence and Academic Achievement. We will be celebrating these achievements over the next fortnight.

A large number of our students are constantly showing a real commitment to their learning. They always strive to be their best and have a go at the opportunities we provide for them at Queechy.

Our teaching staff invested significant time during Term 2 writing reports to communicate with our families about the progress and achievement of your children in our school. Please take the time to talk to your children about their reports and discuss the many good suggestions about areas for improvement in their subject as shared in the report comments.

Parent Teacher on Tuesday night saw many families take the opportunity to come and engage with our teachers in support of their children. If you missed this meeting then please feel free to contact any of our teachers to discuss any areas of concern you have in relation to the education of your children.

This week has seen the arrival of 15 students from Murata in Japan. The students are here in Tasmania for an educational experience for the next three weeks. We have planned a busy schedule for the team and look forward to the interactions they will have with our own students during their stay.

Our Year 8 Melbourne Trip heads off on Friday for a busy few days of exploring, shopping and sporting experiences. Thank you to the team of teachers who have joined the trip and to Lisa Mitchell for organising the event and ensuring it runs smoothly. I look forward to catching up with students next week to hear about their exploits.

Mr Butchart’s 7/8 Drama group proudly display their new Tshirts bought for their upcoming performance “Neighbours Away”. The group have been working on the script since term two and will be performing for audiences later this term.

The play is a parody of Australian soap operas and has lots of characters people will recognise from TV soaps from the last 40 years.

The class are working very hard at learning their lines, creating their characters and working together in a large ensemble. Keep an eye out for future information in the newsletter as the performance date gets closer.

7C and 7E English are studying a Fractured Fairy Tales Unit. We have gained an understanding of what makes a fairy tale and how the original stories have adapted over time. We have been building our collaboration and oral language skills to research and present information to our classmates. Later in the unit, we will focus on developing our analysis skills and constructing our own fractured fairy tales.

Calling all QHS novel enthusiasts

The 2019 Northern Secondary Readers’ Cup, in conjunction with ASLA (Australian School Library Association) is being held on Friday 20 September.   We are looking for an amazing QHS team to compete this year and hopefully reclaim the trophy won last year.   We require 4—6 students to make a team, 2 of which must be G7.  The team will be required to read 7 novels, answer quiz questions at the competition on all titles and present a time-limited creative response including 3 or more titles in the set list.

All interested students please see Mrs. Honey in the Library for further details and information regarding the 7 novels to read, the outline of expectation and information on forming our Queechy High School Readers’ Cup team for 2019.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra time

There are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc.

When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged.  If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is.

We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break
(1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
