Week 20, Term 2 2019

What a busy few weeks we have had at Queechy, once again highlighting the significant opportunities we afford our students here, and across the Queechy Alliance.

We have run our whole school cross-country with high participation rates across the grades. The challenging course that incorporates our neighbour, Stonesthrow, has proven to be a hit with students once again. Thank you to Ryan Innes and the team for the considerable work that goes into ensuring these events occur. Our cross country team performed very well at Kings Meadows on Tuesday representing our school in a positive way. Well done to all who competed!

The last fortnight has had a focus on transition with students at both ends of our school preparing for what lies ahead. Our Queechy Alliance feeder primary schools have had time on our site participating in STEM challenges, getting to know some of our staff and some of the other students that will join them here in 2020.

Our year 10 students have had the opportunity to visit both Launceston and Newstead Colleges, a critical step in making the most informed decisions they can to support their transition to year 11 next year. Thank you to both colleges for these days.

We have also had students attend a taster day at Drysdale, exploring the future opportunities available to them at TAFE. Thank you to Suzi Maddy for organising this trip and to the Drysdale staff for hosting.

We are once again a Beacon Partnership school and the opportunities provided to our students through this partnership are significant and ongoing. 25 year 8 students recently participated in the “Prepare” program aimed at supporting their ability to set and achieve goals. We look forward to continuing to provide high quality experiences like this to our students here at Queechy.

Another fantastic opportunity for students who love problem solving in Maths is coming up soon!

Entrants in the Australian Maths Competition are asked to solve 30 problems in 75 minutes. The problems get more challenging as the competition progresses, so students of all abilities will be challenged and inspired. Students in any year level can enter.

The competition will be held on the 1st of August. If you are interested in your child taking up this opportunity, you can email me at sam.ayre@education.tas.gov.au. There are a limited number of places, so make sure you get in quick!

Instructional Model

Schools within the Queechy Alliance (QA) continue to establish consistent knowledge about the four phases of the Instructional Model: Engage, Explicit Teaching, Targeted Learning and Review. Teachers are implementing elements of the framework in to their classroom practice regularly and they are making adaptions as needed to support student success.

This term, on Monday June 17th, staff from all seven schools met for a Professional Learning session around the Explicit Teaching phase of the Instructional Model (IM). We were fortunate to have Pamela Macklin (our School Improvement consultant) here again to impart her knowledge and wisdom to the group in a collaborative way. It was an opportunity for staff to gain a shared understanding of explicit teaching and the gradual release of responsibility needed by the teacher for students to be successful. The importance of Effective Feedback and Quality Questioning in this phase was also highlighted. Tasks enabled professional conversations with colleagues from other schools and grades, sharing successes, challenges and student and personal development.

Special thanks to Shireen Thomas (School Improvement Leader, Learning Services North), Liz O’Donohue, (Principal, Punchbowl Primary School), Emmy Brient (Principal, East Launceston Primary School), Jeanette Ryan (In-School Leader, East Launceston Primary School) who all presented on the day, and to the following staff from Ravenswood Heights Primary School: Zach Taylor (Principal), Janne Vincent (In- School Leader) and Ann Collins (School Business Manager) for ensuring timely set up, working technology and substantial “brain food”!

Our next session together will be on Monday July 22nd (Student Free day). Led by Karen Hampton (Principal, Norwood Primary School), staff will be engaged in ‘How Students Learn to Read’ before moving to Moderation groups in the afternoon.

If you have any questions regarding the MYLP please contact your In School Leader.

On Wednesday 12th June, Diana Butler, CEO and Co-Founder of the Care for Africa Foundation, visited three Grade 7 classes to discuss the work that her charity does to help people in Tanzania. The presentation focused on the construction of water wells in local communities and the need for medical care to those who are suffering from water-borne diseases. This presentation was organised to help students make connections to their current Geography unit on water and their class novel in English, 'A Long Walk to Water'. Students found the presentation to be very engaging and many have felt motivated to help support Diana's cause.

If your child is unwell prior to coming to school, we ask that you please keep them at home to avoid spreading the illness.

We ask that parents/guardians remind your child if they are unwell during class or break time that they are requested to go to the First Aid room.  Please remind them not to contact you directly.  When they present at First Aid, staff will phone parents/guardians and request that the student is collected from school as soon as possible.  By following this process it assists in the following ways:

1. Enables the student to be cared for whilst they are waiting to be collected.

2. The student is able to be collected as soon parents/guardians arrive at the office,
- with no disruption to the class.

On the 24th of May, a group of students headed out to the University of Tasmania to compete in the annual Science and Engineering Challenge, held by the University of Newcastle. Of the 32 students who attended, small groups were created to compete in 2 half day activities or 1 full day activity, with Queechy’s competitive nature really shining through. The Science and Engineering challenge is a really great opportunity to compete in activities that are outside of our comfort zones. Of the many activities available to us on the day, the bionic hand, mars rover, power station and communication challenges proved tricky but rewarding and tested students problem solving and communication skills. However none stood out like the infamous bridge building competition. The Queechy team really got around the grade sevens who competed in the full day activity, and we were all very proud of their efforts.  At the end of the day, Queechy High School came 3rd.

The event is a really great way to extend students from grade seven to ten, and also provides a day of socialising with students from other schools. A huge thank you to    Miss Anderson and Mr Ayre for supervising us all on such an amazing day.

The 2019 Queechy Cross Country was run in perfect conditions around the challenging Stonesthrow course. Students had to contend with the infamous “Wall” upon their return to the finish line, but were treated to one of the most picturesque courses that we could offer. We were impressed with the attitude that students displayed while participating and congratulate our champions and students selected to represent Queechy at the Inter High.

Health and Physical Education 2019

In Health, Grade 7 students have been focusing on Nutrition, with an emphasis on super snacks, water and energy drinks. Students spent the lesson looking at the role media plays in food advertising. Students had to find food advertisements that were targeting children across a number of media platforms, focusing in particular as to whether they were promoting healthy or unhealthy foods.

In PE, Grade 7’s have been focusing on a fitness unit, which coincided with our school cross country. Students have been looking at ways they can increase their fitness across a range of different fitness components. Students completed a fitness circuit which focussed on health and skill related components of fitness.

This year Queechy High School was fortunate to have two teams in the Junior B Inter-High School Debating Competition. The roster took place over 7 weeks and our students competed against teams from St Patricks’ College, Scotch Oakburn College, Riverside High School and Scottsdale High School. Topics debated included ‘that we should all be vegetarian’, ‘ that performance enhancing drugs in sport be allowed’ and that ‘plastic water bottles should be banned’.  By the final week, QHS 3 had made the grand final and competed in an impromptu debate against Scottsdale High School on the topic ‘that these are the best days of our lives’. The team performed a fantastic debate, winning the Junior B competition. Many thanks to Zarah for captaining the team and mentoring the grade 7 students and former Queechy students, Chloe, Mia and Reuben for coming along to the competition each week, adjudicating the debates and supporting our junior students. Many thanks also the parents who also came along and supported our teams.

The 2019 Queechy debating students were

QHS 2 – Oliver, Mia, Jessica, Kirralee, Holly, Ruby,

QHS 3 – Courtney, Abbie, Elenoa, Ella

Currently Grade 10 English students are studying a range of texts that explore the concept of war. One of the poems studied is Dulce et Decorum Est, written by Wilfred Owen in 1917. This poem was written in response to his experiences in France during WW1. Unlike many other poets of his time, Owen challenged the patriotic view that is was honourable to die for one’s country in war; instead, Dulce et Decorum Est depicts the horrors of life in the trenches.

Dulce et Decorum Est   by Wilfred Owen

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,

Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,

Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,

And towards our distant rest began to trudge.

Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,

But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;

Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots

Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling

Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,

But someone still was yelling out and stumbling

And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—

Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,

As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,

He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace

Behind the wagon that we flung him in,

And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,

His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood

Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,

Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud

Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest

To children ardent for some desperate glory,

The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est

Pro patria mori.

Notes:
Latin phrase is from the Roman poet Horace: “It is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country.”

When studying war literature, students are learning to use the SPECS and SLIMS framework, which requires them to analyse the poet’s use of a range of language devices to convey their message.

SPECS and SLIMS:

Subject matter (content)
Perspective (point of view)
Emotion (mood and tone)
Craftmanship  > > > Structure
                                Language
                                Imagery
                                Movement
                                Sound

School Uniforms

A reminder to all parents and students, to name and label all articles of clothing to help identify lost or missing uniforms.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra time

There are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc.

When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged.  If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is.

We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break (1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
