It was pleasing to see the number of young people actively engaged in our Swimming Carnival at the Aquatic Centre last Friday. The organisation and structure of our carnival is the best in any school I have worked in. The variety of activities and events are well paced and engaging for our students. Thank you to the students for your support of the carnival and to the staff team who ensured the carnival was a success.

As always we welcome constructive feedback to improve anything we do here at Queechy. If you have great ideas or suggestions about how we can improve or amend our carnivals in the future then please make contact with myself or Suzanne Otley in the HPE department here at school.

Uniform

Uniform is always an important part of ensuring equity in any school. We need to make sure no students feel less important than others because they can’t afford the latest clothes or outfits. A common uniform, worn by all students, is an important element of what we do to make our young people feel welcome, supported, safe and included in our school community. Parents have a vital role in ensuring your children are always in our uniform. Your support of our uniform is also a key message to share with your children.

If there are any reasons why you don’t have access to the correct uniform then please contact the grade leader of your son or daughter so we can assist in helping you support our uniform policy.

A reminder that black leggings or sports tights and school striped football shorts are not a part of our uniform for boys or girls.

Grade 10 students have just completed a 4 week unit of trigonometry culminating in a test on the topic. Students have been offered the opportunity to make adjustments to their answers and resubmit in order to improve their outcome for the unit.

They have now commenced a unit of algebra which will take them until the end of term to complete.

A number of students, along with students from other schools, are undertaking advanced mathematics under the guidance of Newstead College. The students are taking Level 3 Maths Methods which is a demanding year 11 subject.

Year 8 HaSS classes have recently completed a unit about the medieval era and are now focusing on the 9th to 11th centuries of Europe – the time of the Vikings. Classes have just begun a study of Vikings. Students are exploring many aspects of Viking life including their raiding destinations, Norse mythology and social structures.

The curriculum is being delivered through a blended learning approach this year. Please ask your children about Canvas which they can use to access HaSS learning content from home as well as school. Their lessons are still interactive and engaging but also offer the additional option of being accessible when students are away or for parents to access their children’s learning.

So far, Year 8 HaSS classes have been studying the changes that have occurred since the ancient era and some classes have also created timelines to reflect these major events.

When asked about their experiences with HaSS so far this year, our students were very happy to share their thoughts:

Charlie: ‘I think the start of the year for HaSS has been great. I have learned a lot about the Vikings so far that I have never known before and I’m looking forward to what’s to come’.

Ella: ‘I learned this year that Vikings aren’t what people made them look like’.

Kenneth: ‘I’m looking forward to learning more about Vikings, since I was semi-surprised by how they really looked. My experience so far has been pretty decent, the working environment (my seating plan) has been okay’.

Tobias-Thor: ‘I have learned only a little bit about the Vikings this year but a lot about the feudal system and medieval ages. I want to learn more about Vikings’.

Mia: ‘I am excited for learning more about Norse mythology because I prefer those Gods who are faulted’.

Throughout this term students have been studying the art of storytelling. This has involved reading traditional and fractured fairy tales. As part of this work students have looked at the important elements of fairy tales.

Having fun with sentences and exploring what makes a sentence has been a highlight for some. This has brought out some amazing creativity within individuals.

Over the rest of the term grade 7’s will be applying what they have learnt by using their creativity to modify a fairy tale of their choice. We are looking forward to reading some exciting fractured fairy tales that demonstrate the great learning that students have done.

Once again, the God’s were smiling on the Queechy High School students arriving at the Launceston Aquatic Centre on Friday 6th March, 2020 for the annual School Swimming Carnival; providing perfect weather conditions.

All attendees participated in yet another brilliantly orchestrated and well supervised action packed day of novelty challenges, water slide fun and streamlined swimming events.  The successful Carnival provided opportunity for all to participate in water activities to suit all capabilities.

On Wednesday the 11th of March a group of 30 students from Marine Science and Science Extended attended the Australian Maritime College (AMC). Students were given a detailed tour of the facilities that AMC has to offer students interested in the maritime industry. A highlight for students was the simulation centre where students got to drive a ship into a harbour, a few of us left the room feeling like we had just been at sea. Students loved seeing the aquaculture centre that houses Atlantic Salmon and Rainbow Trout, students got to see the tanks up close and see how the Rainbow Trout have personalities like a puppy.

The Queechy High School Association will be conducting our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday the 1st April 2020 at 7:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room, Admin Block.

We are seeking nominations from parent and community representatives to join our school association.

If you are interested in supporting Queechy through participation on our School Association then please contact Rob Fleming, Returning Officer on 63414455, to obtain a nomination form.

Nominations close on the 31st March 2020 at 4:00 p.m.

PARKING IN SCHOOL GROUNDS

When parking in the school grounds, please use the visitor carpark, the parking bays near the visitor carpark or the area next to the tennis courts. Please do not park in the bus parking areas as this space is reserved for buses only and this creates further congestion.  Also, a reminder that the disabled park spots are only to be used by permit holders and that permits must be displayed. Due to safety concerns please avoid using the staff car park when dropping off or picking up students.

Main Staff Carpark
The main Staff Carpark adjacent the School Office will be closed off every day at 2:30p.m. to reduce congestion and ensure the safety of our students.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra time

There are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc.  When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged.  If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is.  We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break (1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
