Cup Day Proffesional Learning

Staff this week have been collaborating with colleagues from both Newstead College and Launceston Big Picture School. Over 70 staff attended a professional learning session at Queechy on cup day to examine Quality Questioning as a tool to support student learning.

It was great to see staff from across the Queechy Alliance working together to support student learning with all our feeder primary schools also undertaking this learning on the day in their own schools.

This year will see a concerted effort in the area of Reading with teachers learning new techniques and practices that will support their students accessing and understanding the reading demands in each subject and classroom across the Queechy Alliance.

School photos

Next Tuesday will see our annual school photos and information has been sent out in relation to the organisation of this day. We are striving for all students to be in uniform every day this year, not just on photo day, and we will support families to make this a reality across our school. Uniform is an important part of creating a positive school culture and a sense of belonging for all our students.

Uniform is also a compulsory component of your child’s attendance at Queechy.

Please contact your child’s grade leader if you have having difficulty with getting your young people in uniform every day.

Students in Grade 7 HASS have been studying a unit titled Investigating the Ancient Past. This unit provides students with an overview of our past, including theories of human evolution and the key features of ancient societies. Students are being taught how to read and create timelines, as well as the skills required to effectively research and record information.

Students have begun the year developing their number and place value skills. They’ve been focusing on vocabulary and practicing algorithms used for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Additionally, they have been working on order of operations to solve problems.

Freedom Writers

Grade 10 students have begun the year with an introductory unit on the film, Freedom Writers. It is based on the book, ‘The Freedom Writers Diary’ which was written by English teacher, Erin Gruwell and her students from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. They documented their lives during the early 1990s, discussing their daily struggles, particularly racially fuelled gang violence, which erupted after the brutal beating of African-American, Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers.

Grade 10 English Teachers; Emmalie Baylis, Catherine Attenborrow and myself have all noted a high level of student engagement in this unit. Students have completed a variety of short writing tasks, and have just begun their major assessment, which is to write their own diary entry/ies in a similar format to the Freedom Writers. It is a fantastic way for us to get to know our students personally.

Students in 10 Science are investigating Physics this term. We have engaged in a number of practical experiments to develop students’ ability to plan, design, manage safety, graph, and write analytically. This term, students will further their understanding of energy, motion, and force and explore how ideas in Physics influence progress in technology.

Queechy High School Association Committee Meeting will be held in the main office conference room at QHS on Wednesday 4th March 2020 at 7:00p.m.

Blue skies, a warm gentle breeze blowing in the Derwent River, 12 great students, 3 very happy staff members and a racing yacht named SWD Kayle; the perfect ingredients for a once in a lifetime opportunity to go sailing.

The experienced, caring volunteer crew from the Making Waves Foundation made everyone feel at ease before gently inviting and encouraging our students to man the winches, steer the boat, wind the coffeepot, pancake as the sail moved from side to side, and have a Titanic moment on the bow.

Staff watched proudly as each student tried all of these challenges and eagerly waited for their next turn.

It was a fabulous day where all students tried new experiences and discovered that being challenged by circumstance doesn’t mean being left behind. David Pescud began the foundation 25 years ago and generous corporate and individual sponsorship has enabled our students to participate.

Some student thoughts about the trip:

Nick: Excellent! It was fun to do!

Hayley: Surprising! I thought it would be boring but I got to actually do stuff. I felt safe, we had life jackets. The crew knew what they were doing and they talked to us.

Ella: Enjoyable! I’m glad I went!

Hollie: Great! I thought the boat would tip but it didn’t.

Trey: Amazing!

Clay: Would I do it again? Hell yes!

Sally: It was so good….

Zahlia: A really different way to spend my birthday!

On Saturday January 18th a group of Queechy students combined with students from Brooks High School to attend the events of the MONA FOMA Art Festival.

Students submitted art to be included in the exhibition at Queen Victoria Art Gallery, titled ‘Calculating Infinity’. Artist, Josh Foley, requested Queechy and Brooks students to make sculptures of monsters to be included with his work in the main gallery. Their work needed to be original and make use of recycled and found materials, no bigger than A3 in size.

With the support of the Smith Family, students got to experience a big Arts festival as well as experiencing having their own artwork on display to a wide audience in a public space.

Such an excellent experience for these students during their summer holidays!

PARKING IN SCHOOL GROUNDS

When parking in the school grounds, please use the visitor carpark, the parking bays near the visitor carpark or the area next to the tennis courts. Please do not park in the bus parking areas as this space is reserved for buses only and this creates further congestion.  Also, a reminder that the disabled park spots are only to be used by permit holders and that permits must be displayed. Due to safety concerns please avoid using the staff car park when dropping off or picking up students.

Main Staff Carpark
The main Staff Carpark adjacent the School Office will be closed off every day at 2:30p.m. to reduce congestion and ensure the safety of our students.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra time

There are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc.  When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged.  If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is.  We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break (1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
