What an impressive bunch of young men and women.
You have done yourselves and your families proud as you end your time with Queechy in the most positive way possible.
Leaving Queechy is an example of a rite of passage. An event to celebrate you passing from one stage of your life to the next. Rites of passage are an important part of our modern society, they help cement a sense of who we are, where we belong and most importantly they show you who is here to support you as you make the transition from one significant time in your lives to the next.
You have been supported by many people, from the families that love you unconditionally to your friends from outside grade 10, and the staff who have joined you this week to celebrate this tradition of graduating from Queechy and heading off onto the next stage of your never ending learning journeys.
In your time with us I hope you can take away the following as observations of our school and our school community:
Queechy is a school where the student comes first, everything we do as teachers, everything we plan for and then try to develop and implement has been for you, the students.
Queechy is a school where the individual matters. I have seen on a daily basis the care offered to you and your families by the incredible staff team at Queechy. Not just the teachers but our support team, our admin team, our teacher assistants the cleaners and ground staff and all our other non-teaching staff.
Queechy is a school of connections. It has been evident in my time here that many of you have very strong links with other students across the school, whether they are in grade 7 or 10. I see evidence every day in the way you can step up and care for each other and the rest of our students, that’s a rare thing to see in many of our schools.
Queechy is a school of aspirations. All of you have a positive future mapped out for yourselves, for some this future may be a bit fuzzy at the moment, for others the pathway ahead is clear and well defined, but in all cases each and every one of you are able to clearly articulate that you want a positive future and are ready to have a go at anything the future throws your way.
And Lastly, Queechy is a school where the adults matter. Not just the teachers but every adult in our school has had an impact on where you are today. Think back to all the interactions you have had with adults in our school since you first began 4 years ago. Think back to the gems of wisdom you may have received from some of our non-teaching staff, think back to the many hours of interactions you have had with your many teachers over the years. It’s all those interactions, conversations, role modelling, coercion, cajoling, encouraging and belief in who you are that have helped make you the young men and women you are today.
So I congratulate you on completing this leg of your journey, I encourage you to remain positive, make the most of every opportunity and always, always have high expectations of yourself.
Our new Queechy Mission, developed in conjunction with students from this grade is: To inspire and prepare all students for a positive future.
We have been working to prepare you for your future, not our past. We have worked hard to ensure every one of you leaves Queechy with the skills necessary to excel at the next stage of your life and beyond.
Our Queechy vision states; Queechy High School is a diverse and inclusive learning community. We are resilient, life-long learners.
We are fortunate to have an extremely diverse student population. You come from many different backgrounds, countries, cultures and religions.
This is a strength of our school and a reason to celebrate who you are as young people.
Our ultimate goal has always been to make sure we have set you up for a life of learning as completing year 12 is no longer the endpoint of your education.
You all have one significant common link, you are all students of Queechy High, something you will carry with you as a positive memory from your teenage years.
And to finish I will leave you with this question.
What has been your legacy at Queechy High School, how will you now be remembered by the students and adults you leave behind?
Enjoy next year and leave Queechy knowing that each and every one of you has had a significant impact on our school and the staff and students you leave behind.
Thank you.
