Week 35, Term 3 2019

F1 In Schools

Our F1 in Schools teams have been competing at the Tailrace centre this week and have once again represented our school with distinction. Our Cadet teams have learnt an incredible amount during their preparation for this event with teamwork, time management and public speaking being at the top of their list.

I have been impressed with their understanding of engineering principles and their use of the software package to design their cars and meet the technical requirements of the competition. Our senior team had an extremely impressive booth to display their car and included lovely touches like the laser cut car models that spectators to the event could purchase.

Overall a very impressive display from the Queechy teams! Well done to all students involved and for the tireless work of Murat Djakic and Donna Frankcombe for facilitating this opportunity for our students.

Anne Bayetto, Queechy Alliance Professional Learning

We were privileged to have world renowned literacy expert work with all staff from the Queechy Alliance at Newstead College on Wednesday evening. Anne’s work on how students learn to read and how we can support reading development is helping shape the way we work across the Alliance.

Grade 6 Parent Information Sessions

This week we held two parent information sessions and had over 150 parents attend to find out more about year 7 and what it will look like for their son or daughter in 2020. The sessions provided opportunities for parents to meet with members of our year 7 team, support team, School Association, office staff and our curriculum team. Thank you to all parents who came along and to our staff for supporting the new parents to our school.

On Wednesday the 18th of September, Melissa and Sita attended the Commonwealth Women in Parliament – Stepping Up Event. This event enabled the students to develop their leadership skills while learning about the varying roles of women in Tasmanian Parliament. Throughout the day, activities included a role play in the House of Assembly, a tour of Parliament House including seeing the Legislative Council in action, role playing scenarios that may be presented to members of parliament by their constituents, and questioning a panel of female parliamentarians of all parties and houses.

Grade seven and eight students travelled to the QV Museum and Art Gallery to critique art works by Angela Casey, a Tasmanian artist. Her exhibition titled “Inquiring Light” demonstrated her skills in composition and use of light in her still life settings. An overall theme of “Black is the colour of silence…a quiet envelope…within a world of noise.” drew interest and questioning by the students.

Her photographs piqued the interest of the students so much that we spent all our time in the gallery and forgot to have lunch! Students drew sketches of their favourite pieces and commented on different aspects of the art works.

This term grade 9 & 10 EAL students at Queechy High have been involved in a mentoring program for refugee and migrant students after school each Wednesday with UTAS. The program has been developing the students’ understanding of post-high school educational pathways, and helping them to make more informed decisions about their future.

Students have recently looked at other cultures and how masks have been used traditionally. They have gone on to plan one of their own, with consideration to its representation and then planned in their journals before beginning.

Lots of detail and preparation went into the making of the masks.

And the results were amazing!

Friday 20th September, Lainey and  Abbie from 7G and  Adriel, Trey, Cohen and Jaxon from 8G represented Queechy High School at the Inter-school Reader’s Cup Challenge held at Scotch Oakburn College.  The Reader’s Cup Challenge requires that each team member successfully read  7 preselected novels and answer quiz questions relative to those books and then present a 4—6 min Creative Response to address at least three of those titles.

We were proud of our students and the way in which they represented us as a school.  Unfortunately The Northern Tasmanian Reader’s Cup Challenge has dwindled in the number of participating schools of recent years, however, of the five High Schools participating this year, Queechy placed 2nd to Scotch Oakburn College and we are delighted with the outcome.

Upon reflection, we were able to ascertain our strengths and weaknesses, and will utilize our debrief to be better equipped for the 2020 Challenge.   The entire Challenge is designed to provide learning opportunities, growth and development, and our team most certainly gained much as a team through our experience this year.  We wish to thank both Mr. R. Barnes and Mrs. D Castley for their support and assistance with our technical requirements which provided another learning opportunity.

Congratulations to our Queechy High School 2019 Reader’s Cup team.

Mrs Tania Honey

Northern High Schools Sport organised and ran a Saturday Morning Netball roster again this year at Hoblers Bridge.  Games were held at 8am, 9am or 10am.  We had four teams participating.  Two in the 7/8 roster, Junior 1st and 2nds, and two in the 9/10 roster Senior 2nds A and B.

The teams played well and tried hard all season but weren’t able to make the finals.

A big thank you must go to our coaches and umpires, who without them, we wouldn’t be able to enter teams. Senior 2nds A was coached and umpired by Cassie Burnett, Senior 2nds B was coached and umpired by Ruby Lanham, Junior 1st was coached by Jacqui Manson, and our Junior 2nds was coached by Ruby.  Thanks to Hayley for umpiring the Junior 2nds, Chloe umpiring the Senior 2nds A every week and the students who stepped up to umpire when needed too. Great to have some past students, current students and parents involved. Really appreciate your help and support.

Sometimes the imagination needs to be let free when building in Wood Technology. Ashley's “Wishing Well” is a prime example of skill, design and problem solving. Mathematical challenges abound throughout this project with  angles intersecting at interesting junctions.

If the student arrives after 9:00am and signs in you will still receive the message as they were absent from Tutor Group.

Please reply to the message with the child’s name, date, and details of your child’s absence.  Parents are required to explain every absence.

Parents have the option of messaging the school to advise of explained absences.

Can parents please double check that our school SMS number has not been blocked in your phone settings.

Road Safety: A reminder to students crossing roads on their way to and from school, to be alert and aware of the dangers when in and around traffic.

PARKING IN SCHOOL GROUNDS

When parking in the school grounds, please use the visitor carpark, the parking bays near the visitor carpark or the area next to the tennis courts. Please do not park in the bus parking areas as this space is reserved for buses only and this creates further congestion.  Also, a reminder that the disabled park spots are only to be used by permit holders and that permits must be displayed. Due to safety concerns please avoid using the staff car park when dropping off or picking up students.

Main Staff Carpark
The main Staff Carpark adjacent the School Office will be closed off every day at 2:30p.m. to reduce congestion and ensure the safety of our students.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra time

There are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc.  When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged.  If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is.  We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break (1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
