Week 33, Term 3 2019

SLB

We are currently in the middle of our selection process for the 2020 Student Leadership Board. Almost 40 students have completed a written application and interviews, more than 25% of the grade. It is pleasing to see both the number and quality of young people who have put their hands up to be involved in a leadership position in 2020.

I have worked alongside Mr Bent, Harry and Anna to interview all candidates and read through their applications. I have been very impressed with the reasons why students want to be involved as members of the SLB.

Next week will see students working on their speeches, to be delivered to the rest of the student and staff body on Thursday.

Successful candidates will begin the leadership transition before the end of this year with our leadership camp at
South Mt Cameron taking place in term 4. This will provide students with a great lead-in to their work on the SLB in 2020. I look forward to working closely with the 2020 SLB in preparation for an outstanding year.

QKR Canteen Ordering

As parents may know we have implemented QKR, (pronounced “Quicker”), as a canteen ordering system. Parents can download the QKR App and add Queechy as their home school. The App allows parents to order and pay for canteen items from home. It is also a good way to browse the new menu we have devised this year. We have moved away from high sugar, low nutritional value items replacing them with options more in line with the healthy food pyramid in an effort to encourage appropriate long-term healthy eating habits in our young people.

Youth Speakout Trip

Wednesday saw 20 students head to Hobart with
Marie Stannus in recognition of their work in the
Youth Speakout Aboriginal Reconciliation competition. Students spent the day at Parliament House, the Tasmanian Museum and Art gallery and Government House. These students all contributed work aimed at highlighting the importance of Aboriginal culture in our community. Thank you to Marie for her support of our students and this ongoing initiative, well done!

Dean Greeno Aboriginal Education Worker

We have welcomed Dean to our staff this term. Dean is a well-connected member of our local Aboriginal community and has already proven himself to be a great asset to our school. We work hard at Queechy to provide the most inclusive environment possible for all our students. With a large percentage of our students identifying as Aboriginal it is extremely important that we work closely with our students and the Aboriginal community to develop strong partnerships that will help our students be aspirational and connect to their own cultural identity. If you are interested in supporting our students in this area then please feel free to contact Dean and discuss how we might work together.

This term grade 8 HASS students have been studying Medieval Japan, in particular the Shogun periods. Students have investigated the different aspects of Japanese culture, some of which still exist in Japan today. Part of this work also included Japanese geography, past and present, as well as ancient Japanese society.

Next term students are looking forward to a trip to
Parliament House in Hobart as part of a unit of work on Civics and Citizenship. Students will be bringing home information about this in the near future.

On Friday the 6th September students travelled to the University of Tasmania in Hobart for the annual
Pharmacy Taster Day. While at the university, the students were involved in four different workshops throughout the day. From making their own hand moisturiser, to taking part in a pharmacy simulator that involved the customer service aspects of being a pharmacist. Some of the simulations gave the students a taste of normal interactions all the way up the extremes of a robbery situation. The students left at 3 o’clock for the long drive back to Launceston with new ideas and aspirations in their sights.

Launceston Global Strike 4 Climate
Friday 20th September 2019
12:00p.m. - 3:00p.m.
Launceston Town Hall, Civic Square, Launceston

The Launceston Global Strike 4 Climate rally is to be held on Friday 20th September commencing at 12p.m. at the Launceston Town Hall.

This is a normal school day and your child is strongly encouraged to be at school.
However, if you wish for your child to attend the rally, we require written permission from you by Wednesday 18th September.
Your child will not be permitted to leave the school unless you personally collect them from the the Main Office.

On Wednesday the 4th September, the grade 9/10 Business and Computing class travelled to the Australian Maritime College to participate in the inaugural ‘AMC Logistics Challenge’. The students had previously participated in 2 online quizzes in preparation for the challenge and also had two visits by Brett Williams, Project Manager of the Schools Engagement section at the Maritime College.

The day consisted of a welcome goodie bag and then a guided tour of the AMC and the chance for students to try out the simulators on offer; several students enjoyed the experience so much that they were keen to take home the equipment! After morning tea, students were given an hour to work out the best route for a chosen Tasmanian product aiming to deliver to an overseas city in the quickest and most cost effective manner.  When the hour was complete, students were then quickly whisked away to Saltz Restaurant for lunch and on their return had to present their ideas to the waiting group of AMC lecturers and management team!

During the presentations, notes were taken, questions were asked and at the conclusion the judges had a discussion and voted on which team successfully met the requirements. At the conclusion all team members were presented with certificates of participation, with the winning team also receiving a $50 voucher.

As with the real world, there were a few unexpected surprises during the day, however all students involved put in an amazing effort to do the best they could to research and deliver a great result. They should all be feeling quite proud of their efforts.

A thank you must go the staff and management at the Australian Maritime College for allowing our students to come into the college and enjoy such an amazing experience, all involved enjoyed the day tremendously.

In class we have learnt about fractured fairy tales. We’ve looked at an array of stories including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and some less well known fairy tales. As well as this, we watched the spin off movie version of Little Red Riding Hood, Hoodwinked. The movie looks at different characters perspectives in the midst of a crime involving a “goody bandit” stealing the land’s recipes. We’ve all really enjoyed this unit and the different stories we’ve looked at. Now we are constructing our own fractured fairy tales.

Applied Technology, the culmination of core curriculum subjects and life experiences. Grade seven have taken on the challenge of designing a student friendly safety poster that raises awareness of the dangers in Materials Design and Technology. They start with a situation and then are given design constraints within the manufacturing brief. With only one block to design three concept posters, their ingenuity and design skills were tested.

Applied.jpg

Theme plates are not only a design representation of student names and interests, they develop skills in the use of machinery, measurement and literacy. Literacy competency is an important element of manufacturing in technology. Student ‘Design Management and Communication’ folios add industry realism to their project outcomes.

Reading
On the first day of Term 3 Janne Vincent and
Ann-Marie McKendrick (In-School Leaders) supported Karen Hampton, Principal of Norwood Primary School, to lead all QA staff in improving their understandings about how children learn to read and the complex processes for our students to become literate for all areas of learning. This was mainly linked to Reading Comprehension and Fluency. The session ensured that all staff were given consistent messages so we all have a shared understanding of how students make meaning through reading.

Guest Speaker
We are very fortunate to have secured the expertise of
Anne Bayetto, Researcher & Lecturer in Inclusive & Specialised Education from Flinders University in Adelaide, to work with our QA staff in the final week of this term. Her topics will include Intervention, Teaching Reading in Grades 5-8 and an overview of the The Big 6. The Big 6 are research based elements that  contribute to reading development; Oral Language, Vocabulary, Phonological awareness, Letter-sound knowledge, Comprehension and Fluency. This is a wonderful opportunity for our staff and will assist them in supporting students in classrooms. Thank you to Newstead College who have offered the use of their facilities for these two days.

Instructional Model
Queechy Alliance schools continue to work on their knowledge and implementation of the four phases of the Instructional Model (Engage, Explicit Teaching, Targeted Learning and Review) into their classroom practice.

Most recently, all seven schools have delivered professional learning on the Targeted Learning phase. Staff further developed consistency and alignment in their understanding of differentiation and the gradual release of responsibility whilst planning a future lesson/learning sequence for their students. The core, Effective Feedback, Formative Assessment and Quality Questioning, continue to be important elements that teachers consider when planning within each phase of the IM.

The teacher works with groups of students who have similar learning needs. Students take greater responsibility for their learning while the teacher observes and intervenes as necessary to develop and reinforce learning.

Students work collaboratively in groups or pairs. This might involve activities practising the content/ concept/skills introduced previously.

Independent learning involves students applying, consolidating and transferring their learning to demonstrate understanding.

Student Absence SMS

The main contact of the student will receive an SMS message if they are an unexplained absence during Tutor Group.

If the student arrives after 9:00am and signs in you will still receive the message as they were absent from Tutor Group.

Please reply to the message with the child’s name, date, and details of your child’s absence.  Parents are required to explain every absence.

Parents have the option of messaging the school to advise of explained absences.

Can parents please double check that our school SMS number has not been blocked in your phone settings.

To avoid receiving an SMS please phone the school on
6341 4455 to advise of your child’s absence before 8:45am or leave a message on the

Absent Student Message Bank 6341 4444.

Road Safety: A reminder to students crossing roads on their way to and from school, to be alert and aware of the dangers when in and around traffic.

PARKING IN SCHOOL GROUNDS

When parking in the school grounds, please use the visitor carpark, the parking bays near the visitor carpark or the area next to the tennis courts. Please do not park in the bus parking areas as this space is reserved for buses only and this creates further congestion.  Also, a reminder that the disabled park spots are only to be used by permit holders and that permits must be displayed. Due to safety concerns please avoid using the staff car park when dropping off or picking up students.

Main Staff Carpark
The main Staff Carpark adjacent the School Office will be closed off every day at 2:30p.m. to reduce congestion and ensure the safety of our students.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra time

There are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc.  When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged.  If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is.  We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break (1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
