English

Term 3 has been an exciting term in English for all year groups.

Our Grade 7 cohort have completed a novel study and essay unit, before beginning a highly engaging life writing unit that provides opportunities for students to read and respond to a wide variety of texts including autobiographies, picture books, interviews and create their own life writing texts.

Grade 8 has jumped back in time over one hundred years to learn about the experiences of those onboard the Titanic in a historical recount unit. Students have learnt about the key events surrounding the sinking of the ship and have created diary entries as part of the unit assessment.

‘I Have a Dream’ is a phrase heard regularly in Grade 9 English as students have developed an understanding of the key features of persuasive speeches through analysing
Martin Luther King’s famous speech. As the term progressed, the Grade 9 students then developed an effective speech to persuade their own audience based on a topic of interest.

It is safe to say, our Grade 10 students have had the busiest term in English, moving from the War Poetry unit early in the term to preparing and undertaking their first ever English exam. Students have been able to develop a comprehensive understanding of the experiences of soldiers during
World War One through their analysis of a range of poems written on the battlefields in Europe. They have also learnt important study skills in preparation for their future education.
