English

This term in English, all year groups have been undertaking a novel study. Each year group has been focusing on improving their reading comprehension, close text analysis and paragraph writing skills. The learning acquired through these novel studies provides students with a range of skills that can be used across all areas of the curriculum.

Our WINN (What I Need Next) reading program for Grade 7 and 8 has been in full swing. Our Grade 7 students have focused on developing their reading comprehension skills through a range of different texts and have been completing a Picture Book Portfolio using a text of their choosing. Grade 8 students have been involved in Literature Circles, where they have read a range of First Nations picture books and developed their collaboration skills through rich text discussions.

So far this year, both Grade 9 and 10 students have had the opportunity to view English performances from Saroo Brierley, author of A Long Way Home and the inspiration for the film Lion. This week Grade 9 students have also enjoyed a performance from Bell Shakespeare called Such Sweet Sorrow based on the Romeo and Juliet story.

In Term 3, we are very excited for our annual Children’s Book Week Events from the 18th to the 22nd of August. There will be a range of exciting competitions for students throughout the entire week including our annual Book Character Dress-Up Day on Friday the 22nd of August. We encourage all students to dress as their favourite book character and join in the fun throughout the day including the Reader’s Relay.
