One of the cuisines we have explored this term is Indian. Over the past few weeks students have made Tandoori Chicken which was served with Indian Spiced Rice and Raita. The following week we made Saffron & Honey Jalebi, an Indian dessert made of a fried batter that is coated in a Saffron and Honey syrup - delish!
Alongside all of these delicious dishes, students are planning the first Food Truck of the year. These Food Trucks are an exciting way for students to have a real-life experience, preparing and selling food for their peers and staff. It's hard to say who looks forward to it more, students or the staff. Of course they are learning the principles of design along the way.
On Thursday afternoons the Street Art program runs for students who select it as a personal pursuit to study in grade 7 and 8. One aspect of our course is learning about ‘tagging’. Definition: tag (scribble) A stylized signature, normally done in one colour.
The simplest and most prevalent type of graffiti, a tag is often done in a colour that contrasts sharply with its background. Tag can also be used as a verb meaning "to sign". Prior to our excursion students designed their own tag and we went down to the skate park at Royal Park and presented our tags in the legally designated area using paint pens.
Let's explore what our Year 7 to 10 students have been up to in Mathematics this term!
Year 7: They've been diving into numbers and measurements, mastering the basics of arithmetic and geometry.
Year 8: Delving deeper into mathematics, Year 8 students have been focusing on fractions and decimals, sharpening their understanding of numerical intricacies.
Year 9: With a practical approach, Year 9 students have been tackling financial mathematics and indices, learning how math applies to everyday financial decisions.
Year 10: Taking on more complex challenges, Year 10 students have been studying trigonometry, volume, and surface area, exploring advanced concepts in geometry and spatial reasoning.
Across all year levels, our students are making significant strides in their mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills. We look forward to seeing their continued growth in the Maths!
In other news, all seven schools in the Queechy Alliance (including our six feeder primary schools and Queechy High) have begun working together to develop a common approach to teaching Maths.
Year 5-10 Maths teachers have already engaged in Professional Learning at the beginning of term and we are hoping to continue this collaboration for the rest of the year. Our next planned collaborative effort will include moderation of student work for Years 5 to 8 in Term 2.
In grade 7, students have been learning about living and nonliving things, biotic and abiotic factors, habitats of organisms and food chains and food webs.
Students were lucky enough to visit QVMag where they not only had the opportunity to visit the Wetlands exhibition and learn about interesting facts of the Tamar River in Launceston, but they were also lucky enough to check out the Dinosaur Museum and Cool Light exhibition.
Check out some of our students having a fun time on the excursion!!!!!!
A major focus in English and HaSS this term has been teaching students how to write well-structured paragraphs (following the PEEL process) and to write effective notes using the Cornell Note Taking strategy.
These skills can be used across subjects and will support students with their future study at Queechy and beyond.
Teachers have been meeting weekly this term to plan engaging lessons aligned with the Australian Curriculum. Time has been spent uploading these lessons to Canvas so students working from home have access to all the learning taking place in the classroom. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about Canvas.
Next term, we have some students entering the Australian History and Geography Competitions. These will take place in week 4 and 5. It has been great to see how many students put their hand up to enter and we look forward to seeing their results in July.
We have a number of performances booked for each grade throughout terms 2, 3 and 4. These range from Author talks, War performances, Shakespeare sessions and various plays on Ancient History. All shows align with the units of work students will be studying.
Our WINN (What I Need Next) program in Grade 7 and 8 is happening again this year. In this lesson, students work in flexible groups focusing on specific reading strategies and skills. Results from previous years have shown considerable growth in comprehension skills and fluency.
On behalf of all the English and HaSS team, we hope you have a relaxing and restful holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone in Term 2.
The Student Leadership Board have had a busy and productive start to 2024. We coordinated the well-attended Welcome BBQ for parents and guardians at the beginning of the year, and have spent time with the new grade 7s running break time activities and welcoming them to the Queechy community.
We ran an Easter Raffle and a Sports Colours Day with a lunchtime football game, with monies raised from these going back to the SLB to fund their Legacy gift to the school at the end of the year.
Our major fundraiser this term was Relay for Life, which was held at the Silverdome on March 16th and 17th. This was a great bonding experience for us, and we experienced how powerful it can be when everyone comes together to support an important cause like this. As a school and wider community, we managed to raise a total of $4, 514.00 for the Cancer Council. This is an incredible achievement, and we want to thank everyone who donated or supported us.
To finish off the term we are running a staff v students netball game and fundraiser BBQ this Friday. We will be hitting the ground running in Term 2, with the ANZAC assembly in Week 1, an Earth Day fundraiser planned and organised by our School Enhancement and Sustainability portfolio; along with a fundraiser for Strike it Out, a local charity that aims to fill the gaps in emergency care services, being planned by Community Liaison.
We look forward to building on the work we started in Term 1 with staff and students and within our wider Queechy community during Term 2.
Before the Easter break we held our annual two day swimming carnival at the Launceston Aquatic Centre. Participation levels were high as usual, with students enjoying rotations of the waterslide, novelties and competitive swimming races.
Throughout the two days there were some fantastic performances, but none more impressive than the staff who participated in the staff vs students relays at the end of both days. At the conclusion of the carnival, it was McLeod who were our champion house on 425 points, closely followed by Grace (379), Allen (309) and Miller (269).
On Thursday 11 April, a strong team of 40 students represented the school at the NHSSA Division 1 carnival against other high schools from the Northern region of the state. We again had a number of strong performances on the day, with many of our students placing in the top 3 of their respective races or stepping up to fill races at the last minute, showing true Queechy Spirirt.
In a positive result for us, we improved on our 4th place finish last year to finish 3rd overall, behind winners Prospect and second place Riverside.
Dear Parents and Carers, we hope this newsletter finds you in good health and spirits as we approach the end of term one.
There are many positive things that our students are continually achieving at QHS. Our SLB are constantly organizing fundraisers to support various causes. Some students are participating in clubs and organizations that promote cultural diversity and inclusion, while others are taking part in science and engineering challenges, mountain biking and camps which demonstrate the rich learning opportunities that are afforded to our students at QHS. Additionally, many students are excelling academically and creatively, pursuing their passions, and achieving their goals. It is inspiring to see students making a positive impact on our school in their own unique ways.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of two of our students. Oliver in grade 10 for being selected in the Tasmanian under 18 basketball squad and Sophie in grade 9 who has been appointed one of the vice-captains of the Tasmanian under 16 women’s football team and Poppi and Ava in garde 10 who were selected as well and George in grade 10 has also been in Queensland this week, competing in the Australian Age Championships on the Gold Coast in swimming . These are amazing achievements and as a QHS community we are extremely proud of all of them.
I would also like to make a special mention to Oscar in grade 9 who has been putting in a tremendous effort coaching junior basketball. It is great to see our students doing us proud by giving back to the community. Well done, Oscar.
Respectful behaviour is vital for maintaining healthy relationships and creating a positive environment. It is a behaviour that shows consideration, kindness, and empathy towards others. Respectful behaviour promotes positive relationships where people treat each other with respect which leads to the creation of positive relationships based on trust and support. It is a behaviour that should be practiced by everyone, regardless of age, gender, or culture. When people feel respected, they are more likely to communicate openly, share their thoughts and feelings, and work together to achieve common goals. As a QHS community, we want to create a respectful and inclusive environment by not tolerating any form of disrespectful behaviours such as the use of offensive or derogatory language, or any kind of racism. We should all strive to treat each other with kindness and respect, regardless of our differences.
Wearing a full school uniform is an essential aspect of school life. It is not merely a dress code; it is a symbol of identity and pride as well as fostering a positive school culture. Wearing school uniform creates a healthy school environment where all students feel included and welcomed. QHS students should feel proud to represent our school by wearing their uniform every day. Hoodies and tights are not part of our uniform, and I would appreciate parents’ support by ensuring that students are in full school uniform every day.
As the Principal, I look forward to working with the students, staff, parents, and carers to create a positive and engaging learning environment in term two. I very much look forward to seeing students at QHS achieving their academic and personal goals and developing into positive contributors to our school community. I am committed to promoting a culture of respect, inclusivity, and diversity, where everyone feels valued and supported. I am confident that together we can create a school community that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.
During the term holidays, students are encouraged to take a break, enjoy their time with family and friends, and recharge in readiness for term two. Finally, we would like to thank all our parents and guardians for their continued support and involvement in our school community. We value your feedback and suggestions, and we look forward to another successful term ahead.
Parent Workshop - Anxiety Coach
WHAT: In terms 2/3, Queechy High School Student Support Team are offering workshops for families in their school community to learn simple strategies to identify, manage and help reduce anxiety in children. - a basic understanding of how anxiety develops and functions.
- an understanding of the problem of increasing levels of anxiety in children and some strategies for its treatment.
