Launceston and Newstead College Enrolments
Both our main Year 11/12 Colleges attended Queechy last week to enrol our Year 10 students for 2022. The majority of our students still head away from Queechy for their Year 11/12 studies with more than 90% of our students heading into a positive year 11 college enrolment. This year has also seen an increase in students transitioning into Apprenticeships across the Launceston region in 2022. Students are also beginning to enrol for our Year 11/12 here at Queechy.
Next year will see the addition of a VET Certificate II Community Services (Aged and Disability care). We are the only school in this area offering this nationally recognised qualification and we have attracted students from multiple feeder High Schools. We will update our school community through the Newsletter next year for our developments of this exciting option for Launceston students.
Norwood Primary Science Day
Nine of our Year 10 students supported a year 3-4 Science Day at Norwood Primary last week. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and feedback from Norwood was very positive, “Thank you so much for organising some helpers for our grade 3/4 science day. All the helpers you sent were just fabulous. They were respectful and so helpful in the classrooms they were placed. All teachers commented on how they showed initiative and were always supporting our students and asking them powerful questions.” Well done to all involved.
In physics, we learned about the relationships between speed, acceleration, force and Newton’s Laws. There were numerous practical activities which cemented the theory we learnt in class. The best part was racing miniature cars down ramps to examine the effect the height of the ramp has on the speed. We also examined the forces involved in car crashes and discussed safety points in cars.
In the Biology unit we studied genetics, inheritance and evolution and adaptation. We learned how traits are inherited and why they are not always on display. Through learning about evolution, we discovered how humans and other animals have adapted and changed over time to the organisms we see today. We studied the film GATTACA which is a post-apocalyptic film demonstrating how genetic engineering could be misused creating inequality in the world.
A stand out was the flame testing where we saw the colours different metal compounds make in flames. This is the science behind fireworks. We learnt a lot about the periodic table and through learning this we understand the relationship of different elements in the periodic table which make up our world.
In the Earth and Space unit we researched and learnt about The Big Bang and the climate crisis. We studied these areas with open minds, it has helped us understand our place in the Universe and on Earth. We are currently looking at our impact on the planet and how to decrease our carbon footprint to help support a happy and green future for Tasmania and the world.
What we have studied and learnt in year 10 Science has given us a good base for our future science endeavours.
Sincerely, 10F Science Legends
Grade 9 students have been studying a unit on Australian texts. One of these texts has been a picture book titled The Rabbits by John Marsden.
Through reading the book The Rabbits students have learnt a lot about the history of Colonisation in Australia, even including The Stolen Generations. They have explored what an allegory is and how the text has used native animals to present the story of our history. Students have been taught how to analyse images, identify themes and use De Bono’s Thinking Hats to consider the key messages and underlying meaning of the text.
Another text studied is a poem titled We Are Going by Oodgeroo Noonuccal.
Students were taught how to annotate the poem to show their understanding of the key vocabulary and poetic devices used. Below is Ellie and Molly (9A) annotations:
In year 10 maths, the students have been studying statistics and probability and their application to real world situations. Prior to these units the students were learning about quadratic equations and graphing relations. Students are finishing the school year with much excitement and anticipation for the completion of their time at Queechy and the accompanying celebrations. The mathematics staff wish them success and enjoyment in their future endeavours.
Our grade 8 HaSS students started the term with a unit investigating Feudal Japan. We looked at various aspects of Japanese culture, including the shoguns, military rule, the samurai & their values and Japanese cultural beliefs & influences.
We completed many activities looking at various Japanese cultural aspects including a research task where we looked into the samurai bushido code. This led to us creating our own moral codes and what each moral aspect means in our own lives.
To conclude the term, we are moving into a small unit on landscapes and landforms where we will be investigating Australia’s natural landforms and the geomorphic process that create these landforms and shape our natural landscapes.

Two of our sustainability-minded students Abbie and Kirra had the opportunity to attend the 2021 Landcare Conference at the Tailrace Centre in the last school holidays. They were able to engage in a range of different talks and activities from experts from around Tasmania, including Shasta Henry aka Bug Girl. Thanks to Landcare Tasmania for this amazing opportunity.
