School Leadership Board Induction Assembly 2021
Enter your shoot key provided by QHS on your online order form
Sibling photo forms are NOT returned to the school office, but instead handed to MSP photographers on the day (Tuesday 2 March).
Grade 7/8 - Friday 19 March
Grade 9/10 - Tuesday 23 March
The School Swimming Carnival will be held at the
Launceston Aquatic Centre, commencing at 10:00am and concluding at 2:30pm.
Attendance on the Swimming Carnival Day is compulsory, as is attendance on any other school day. Participation rates are always high as the carnival is designed to give every student multiple chances to get in the water regardless of their swimming ability e.g. novelty events at the shallow end and unlimited water slide use to run alongside traditional races.
Students will be bussed to the pool from QHS at 9.30am and return to school by 2.45pm.
The canteen will operate providing food and refreshments but bringing food and drink is also recommended.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Parents/Guardians are asked not to attend. Thank you for your cooperation.
Consent forms were given to students and were due back Friday 19 February. Please contact the Queechy office if you are requiring a new consent form and hand this back to your Tutor Group as soon as possible.
Grade 10 maths extended has got off to a very positive start.
The group is extremely diverse with 50% being made up of EAL students whose extension in maths often involves mainly understanding the language of the problem being attempted, they have been well supported by the presence of their EAL teacher Mr Andy Goodwin.
The group as a whole are working solidly with a wide range of current abilities, some reinforcing their normal class work and others really extending into complex problem solving.
Students in Grade 7 science have been learning about lab safety and an introduction to practical investigations.
Students are currently receiving their Bunsen Burner licenses, which will allow them to access the variety of practical opportunities available at Queechy High School. In the photos below students from Mr Parkin’s 7D Science class are practicing making scientific observations after mixing different chemicals.
To start our year in Art, grade 7's have designed a covered page for their sketchbooks inspired by organic and geometric shapes. We looked at some famous artists who are well known for using shape as a focus in their artworks - Joan Miro,
Henri Matisse, M.C Escher, Andy Goldsworthy and Paul Klee.
Health and Physical Education 2021
Welcome to 2021
What a wonderful start to HPE.
In grade 9, students have been focussing on invasion games. The grade 9 classes are currently undertaking a capture the flag unit where the major focus has been on spatial awareness. With a major emphasis on creating space within the game situation and personally focussing on their ability to dodge and change direction in order to either evade another students or to capture another student.
There are lots of events starting and coming up soon in the HPE department. We have just started a Thursday Afternoon Volleyball roster which is running for the first time in many years. Queechy High School has 9 teams entered in this roster. Major thanks to Mr Barns for organising this. Mr Barns is also running Volleyball training sessions after school on Wednesday’s.
The school Swimming Carnivals are being held on Friday 19th March for grades 7 and 8 and Tuesday 23rd March for grades 9 and 10.
Please keep your eyes and ears for the many more opportunities that will be offered by the HPE department during the remainder of the year.
Grade 10 English - Freedom Writers
Grade 10 students have begun the year with an introductory unit on the film, Freedom Writers. It is based on the book, ‘The Freedom Writers Diary’ which was written by English teacher, Erin Gruwell and her students from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. They documented their lives during the early 1990s, discussing their daily struggles, particularly racially fuelled gang violence, which erupted after the brutal beating of African-American, Rodney King by
Los Angeles police officers.
Grade 10 English Teachers: Lisa Mitchell,
Catherine Attenborrow and I have all noted a high level of student engagement in this unit. Students have completed a variety of short writing tasks and are about to begin their major assessment, which is to write their own diary entry/ies in a similar format to the Freedom Writers. It is a fantastic way for us to get to know our students personally.
Alongside historical knowledge and content, students will be taught how to read and create timelines, take notes using the Cornell Note-taking method and research effectively.
We will finish the term with an Inquiry task so students can put their skills to practise and deepen their understanding of Ancient civilisations.
‘Electric Botany’ is a collaborative Art trail which celebrates the work of well known Australian botanical illustrator
Margaret Stones.
A handful of Queechy students submitted work for this project which has recently been added to a traffic signal box on the corner of Paterson and Charles Street in the Launceston CBD.
Congratulations to all the students who contributed to this project – such a great opportunity to have your artwork on public display!
Visit: 'Explore the trail - Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery' (qvmag.tas.gov.au) for more details about 'Electric Botany', including an electronic map you can use to follow the trail of traffic signal boxes throughout Launceston.
P.S - The Art room is open most Mondays and Tuesdays at lunch for students from all grades who are interested in doing some extra art in their break time!
Hi all,
Let me introduce myself and give you an idea of my role here at Queechy High School. My name is Paul Burton and I’m married with four daughters, 3 are teens and one ‘wanna’ be teen.
I have a background of 30 years in the building industry and
20 years pastoral ministry experience, both voluntary and paid.
I have been the Chaplain at Queechy since March 2020 and continue here in 2021.
If you are unfamiliar with what a school Chaplain does you can find a fact sheet on the education website by following the link attached. Take the time to check it out
https://www.education.tas.gov.au/parents-carers/parent-fact-sheets/school-chaplaincy/
In a nutshell, one thing you can be certain of is that a Chaplain's role is not to convert people to a religion but, rather to offer pastoral care, help and support within the school community, and a listening ear in times of stress or difficulty. Our role is to ensure that you are not going through difficult times alone and to celebrate any ‘life’ victories with you, offering emotional, spiritual care (regardless of spiritual persuasion) and basic counsel.
I provide this in conjunction with the support team at the school which includes the school psychologist, social worker and nurses.
In 2020 I had the opportunity to join in on class lessons and assist with students who might need a little bit of extra help and assist with the running of Brunch Club and I look forward to being able to do this further into the future. This has given me an opportunity to meet students and staff and see just how hard everyone at the school works and offer encouragement and support where it’s needed.
I am looking forward to what 2021 brings and continuing as part of the school community as we support and encourage students in their High Schooling.
If you have any further questions or would just like to touch base for a chat so you can get to know me, please contact me at the school on a Monday between 9-2. I would love to meet you!
Paul Burton
Chaplain
A huge thank you to Billy who has enthusiastically assisted First Aid by sewing seams to make new heat packs. Great job Billy!
Our QHS Student Leaders and staff will be participating in this year's Relay For Life, at St Leonards Athletics Track on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th March. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for the Cancer Council.
Attached is the link to our team page, which also has a button where people can "donate to our team". Thank you to the Queechy High School community who have well and truely exceeded our fundrasing goals. If you would like to also support our fundraising efforts, that would be very much appreciated - your contribution will go to a great organisation and a great cause. Every little bit counts towards helping people who are going through a tough time.

A reminder that Student Validation forms are now overdue.
Those students who have not returned their Validation form to the office will not be able to have their photo taken by MSP on Tuesday 2 March or be able to purchase photo packs.
If you are needing another form for your student(s), please contact the Queechy office.
Student Absence SMSThe main contact of the student will receive an SMS message if they are an unexplained absence during Tutor Group. If the student arrives after 9:00am and signs in you will still receive the message as they were absent from Tutor Group. Please reply to the message with the child’s name, date, and details of your child’s absence. Parents are required to explain every absence. Parents have the option of messaging the school to advise of explained absences. Can parents please double check that our school SMS number has not been blocked in your phone settings. To avoid receiving an SMS please phone the school on Absent Student Message Bank 6341 4444. |
Road Safety: A reminder to students crossing roads on their way to and from school, to be alert and aware of the dangers when in and around traffic. |
PARKING IN SCHOOL GROUNDSWhen parking in the school grounds, please use the visitor carpark, the parking bays near the visitor carpark or the area next to the tennis courts. Please do not park in the bus parking areas as this space is reserved for buses only and this creates further congestion. Also, a reminder that the disabled park spots are only to be used by permit holders and that permits must be displayed. Due to safety concerns please avoid using the staff car park when dropping off or picking up students. Main Staff Carpark
The main Staff Carpark adjacent the School Office will be closed off every day at 2:30p.m. to reduce congestion and ensure the safety of our students.

Parents/carers collecting student/s during class time – Please allow extra timeThere are occasions when a parent/carer needs to collect their child from class during the course of the day, i.e. appointments, leaving early etc. When this happens, the student has to be called or collected from the classroom. This causes disruption to your child, the teacher, the class and regularly to the whole school if the student has to be paged. If your child has to be taken out of class time, where possible, we will avoid using the PA system and instead someone will collect your child from the classroom and this may take some time depending on where your child’s class is. We value the learning of our students and therefore ask that where possible, you collect your child during the break times (times shown below) and in particular if you wish to take your child early in the afternoon, the best time is over the lunch break (1:10pm – 1:50pm) before the start of Block 4, i.e. 1:50pm.
