Leading on from Term 3 into Term 4, our Grade 7 HaSS students have been exploring the rich history and culture of
Ancient Egypt.
Students began by exploring geographical features like the
Nile River, learning how it shaped the lives of Egyptians by providing water, food, and transportation. They’ve studied ancient communication methods, including hieroglyphics— the complex writing system that recorded everything from daily life to royal orders. The unit has also explored the importance of gods and the afterlife and the elaborate death customs, like mummification, that prepared individuals for their journey to the next world.
Additionally, students have learnt about the role of significant individuals like pharaohs, who held great responsibilities in governing society.
Below are some work examples from Oliver and Leo from 7D exploring conflict in Ancient Egypt.
For Mathematics this term, students are being introduced to Pythagoras' Theorem and trigonometry.
They will be using similarity to investigate the constancy of the sine, cosine and tangent ratios for a given angle in right-angled triangles, and developing an understanding of the relationship between the corresponding sides of similar right-angled triangles.
Students will apply trigonometry to solve right-angled triangle problems and develop an understanding of the terms 'adjacent' and 'opposite' sides.
We will be learning about selecting and accurately using the correct trigonometric ratio to find unknown sides (adjacent, opposite and hypotenuse) and angles in right-angled triangles.
Sweets and Treats Terms 2 and 3 has been a wonderful class. Students have been motivated, creative and successfully produced a range of treats, including Coconut Jam Slice, Marshmallow, Kingstons, Milo Biscuits, Carrot cake and as pictured decorated cupcakes and Rocky Road Brownie Slice.
Grade 8 students will undertake an adaption study where they will learn about the history of storytelling and how stories have changed through the ages.
The major focus of the unit will be on the legend of Robin Hood and as part of this students will be reading Michael Morpurgo's adaptation, Outlaw. Students will identify and analyse how this adaption portrays the legendary tale.
As an introduction to the unit we have looked at the differences between legends, myths, fables, and fairy tales. Do you know the difference? If not, ask your children, I’m sure they’ll be happy to explain how each of these genres of stories varies.
Students in Grade 8 have been focussing on earth and space, starting with the rock cycle.
Below, students are using lollies to create their own rock cycle.
On Tuesday 22nd October we had 28 students from Grades 7-10 complete their 'first bounce AFL umpiring course' at Queechy.
Students spent the morning in the classroom completing the online component of the course and gaining their certificates, before working with AFL Tasmania staff on learning how to effectively umpire AFL as a field, boundary and goal umpire.
Students now have the skills and qualifications necessary to embark on becoming umpires for football whether that be in a Primary or High school setting or externally on weekends as a first job!
A special mention to Dot and Matilda for being the recipients of the Rebel Sport gift vouchers for their effort attitude and engagement in the sessions.
Around the Q - Ben Frerk - Principal
I continue to be impressed with the high levels of teaching and learning that are evident across our school every day. Our high levels of respect, connection, courage, responsibility, and growth were evident to me on Wednesday and Thursday as we held our whole school athletics carnival.
The way that students encouraged and supported each other is a testament to how much we have improved as a school in the past year. Our students represented our school with pride, and they were truly outstanding ambassadors for all of the parents and spectators to see.
There are a number of exciting things happening at Queechy and also a number of things that we need to celebrate as a school. We have installed a Gaga pit in the Grade 7 area and plan to install more around the school to encourage play and interaction among students during their break times. We are also in the process of installing a professional gym and spin bike room that will support all of our athlete development programs but also our Tier 2 and 3 fitness programs. They will be fully operational by the end of November. We are also transforming the upstairs in H Block into a regulation hub to support the well-being and provide students with a safe place where they engage in their learning. Other outdoor improvements are the installation of an outdoor chess board, a regulation track, and outdoor snakes and ladders games to give students additional fun things to do in their break times.
To support the continuation of high expectations around teaching and learning there will be some changes to the structure of our senior staff. Next year we will have four assistant principals one responsible for each grade. So each year level will consist of an assistant principal, an advanced skilled teacher, and two grade leaders to make sure all of our students at Queechy are known, Safe, Well, and Learning every day.
From the 29th - 31st of October, the 17 students elected into the 2025 Student Leadership Board visited Mt Cameron Field Study Centre, joined by Mrs Phipps, Mrs Pooley and camp co-ordinator, John LeFevre.
Students hiked to the peak of Mt Cameron, undertook many physically and mentally challenging obstacle courses, planned for upcoming events and spent quality time bonding as a team. The students and staff had a fantastic time!
A special mention to Edward and Delilah who were voted by their peers as our 2025 co-presidents. We are so excited to see this team of 17 achieve great things.
The 2024 Athletics Carnival has been run and won, with this year’s carnival being a huge success with many outstanding results. Across the course of the two days the weather was fantastic, participation was at very high levels, and the sportsmanship and support between all students in each grade was fantastic, showing the strong culture that we have built.
In what was one of the most successful carnivals in recent memory on an individual perspective, we had a massive 10 records broken. Congratulations goes to the following students who broke records throughout the two days:
- Prince G7 Boys – High Jump, Triple Jump, Long Jump
- Sophia G7 Girls – Javelin
- Emily G7 Girls – 1500m
- Tahlia G8 Girls – High Jump
- Lachie G9 Boys – 1500m
- Oscar G9 Boys – High Jump
- Ava G10 Girls – Shot Put
- Ryder G10 Boys – 1500m
After the hard fought two days of competition, Allen finished as the House Athletic Champions, followed by McLeod in 2nd, Miller 3rd and Grace in 4th.
Our attention now turns to the Inter High Carnival at St Leonards on November 22nd. We would like to thank all the staff that contributed to the planning and organisation of the carnival that allowed it to run so smoothly.
