Lots of exciting things have been happening in Drama at the Q.
Mr King has joined Mr Butchart in taking the Grade 7 classes this Term and will take over the Grade 7 classes for Terms 3 and 4. Students have been learning about the dimensions of a stage and how they can best be used when performing.
Grade 8, 9 and 10 Drama students were lucky enough to see Launceston Youth Theatre Ensemble’s performance of ‘Dracula’ in Term 2 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. 9 and 10 Drama students are currently working on scripted performances which they will present early in Term 3.
The scripts are titled; The Dilemma of Deidre Dearheart, Kennibal and In The Park.
Grade 8’s are just wrapping up their work around measurement. This involves perimeter, area and volume of regular and composite shapes with students completing an assessment where they have to redesign the space in Queechy square.
Students had to design a new space that is functional and aesthetically pleasing for students to use on a daily basis, with pathways and gardens in mind while using correct formulas for each. To challenge students to work above standard, they must find the longest side of a triangle (the Hypotenuse) for pre-existing garden beds by using the Pythagoras Theorem and then calculate the amount of soil and mulch they need to fill each garden bed.
This assessment really focused on a real world application for all those future backyard garden projects.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas: Beyond the Fence
Hey Grade 9!
We all finished reading John Boyne's powerful novel, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Bruno's innocence and his friendship with Shmuel sparked a lot of discussions in class. Students are going to write a comparative essay comparing the novel to the film.
Mr Joshua Jeffrey
In Grade 9 HaSS this Term, students have been learning about Australian History from the time of the First Fleet (1788) onwards. We are trying to understand history through the lens of different perspectives – Indigenous Australians, settlers, convicts and immigrants.
Do you know who these people are? Do you know how they influenced events at the time?
Our Grade 8 students are exploring the captivating world of chemistry and the fascinating realm of elements. Through hands-on experiments and engaging discussions, they're discovering the building blocks of the universe and making real-world connections to everyday life. Check out our Grade 8’s making observations on new elements!
I am very proud of everything that we do here at Queechy High School. Visiting classrooms on a daily basis I am continually impressed by the quality of teaching and learning that I observe schoolwide. I wish to commend all students embracing our focus on an orderly learning classroom environment by being a learner and being respectful. Respect is an important human characteristic and it is an expectation that all members of the Queechy Community show respect for each other and also respect for themselves.
Opportunities are endless at QHS. On Wednesday the 12th of June in our whole school assembly we acknowledged a number of students for outstanding performances in the swimming and cross-country carnivals. A total 43 students received awards for their efforts in our school carnivals and representing QHS in the Inter High Carnivals as well. Well done to all of these amazing students for representing our school in such an exceptional manner.
This week the Smith Family organsied a two-day workshop for a group of our Grade 9 students involving Hydro Tasmania, looking at potential careers for Women in the energy industry. The day started with a presentation where the students learnt about how the Hydro produces electricity using turbine technology. After the workshop, the students were set a task to design and construct a turbine from plastic milk cartons. The winning team's turbine producing 180mw of electricity. This was a great opportunity for some of our students and I would like to thank the Smith Family and Hydro Tasmania for their involvement and organisation of the two days.
This week our Grade 10 students had their Orientation day at Launceston College, allowing them the opportunity to get a hands-on experience of what College life is like. The day was structured like a normal college day with our students attending classes and having to navigate themselves around the College.
On Monday, our QHS Chess Team attended the Inter-School Chess tournament held at Scotch Oakburn Junior School. The team arrived in perfect timing, to settle, receive instructions and prepare for the first round. Our members were, Iggy, Xander, Archie, Cayden, Dillon, Finlay, Alex, Arabella, Ruby, Lola and Hector. We had four really great wins, with Archie winning a game in record time. We ultimately finished in 5th place, with Scotch Oakburn College being the outright winners. Our Queechy students represented our school impeccably with their positive attitudes and sportsmenship. Thank you Mrs Honey for her excellent work organising and making this opportunity possible for our students.
Health Science UTAS Taster Day
On Thursday 6th June, Mr Tepper accompanied 18 Grade 10 students to attend the Health Science UTAS taster day. Students began their day at the UTAS Newnham campus where they started off in the exercise laboratory completing sport science activities, learning about common tests conducted for students who study sport science at UTAS. Following this, students then went to the biomedicine laboratory, learning about diabetes and blood glucose and had a go at using a blood simulation activity measuring glucose levels. Students then travelled to the new Inveresk campus where they completed a session on nutrition and learnt about the different serving sizes of common foods and food groupings. The day concluded with a session in the Medical School, where students learnt about rural medicine and completed a CPR activity and an ultrasound activity. We received some incredible feedback from UTAS around the way in which our students conducted themselves. Well done to all students for putting their best foot forward.
The Grade 9/10 Child Studies class had the opportunity to visit the Launceston Birth Centre. Jamie, who is the centre’s fully qualified and registered midwife, shared some incredible facts and information around home births and what her role entails. The centre itself is the oldest birth centre in Australia!
Here are some of the takeaways from our students:
- I thought the statistics around home births and learning about birthing in hospitals was really interesting.
- The fairy lights in the birthing pool were cool!
- The idea of a home birth sounds awesome.
- It was interesting to hear the statistics and know that it’s not as dangerous as I thought.
- It’s cool how you can travel anywhere in the world as a midwife.
- Interesting how she used to work in the hospital too so she has seen both options of birthing a baby.
- She was really nice!
- It’s empowering to know that women can do it without being told what to do – their bodies can just do it!
We thank Jamie so much for her time and for supporting our class in their learning.
OPTIONAL ADVANCED SAFEGUARDING TRAINING NOW AVAILABLE IN OUR SCHOOLS
Earlier this year, the Department for Education, Children and Young People rolled out Safeguarding Training for staff, volunteers, and service providers.
This training was compulsory for everyone as part of our ongoing commitment to safeguard Tasmanian children and young people and prevent them from harm.
The department has recently released additional advanced Safeguarding training modules. These are optional and are aimed at anyone who volunteers at a DECYP site, external providers, and anyone in the community who wants to learn more about how to keep children and young people safe.
If you’d like to build your knowledge in this space, the modules are available on the department’s Safeguarding page.
Note: If you require additional assistance to access the modules, please take a look at the FAQs about technical support and additional assistance, which are also on the department’s Safeguarding page.
