In our Physics Extended class, students have been working exceptionally hard to practice their bridge building skills for the Science and Engineering Challenge that was held at UTAS on 23rd May.
Students showed incredible dedication, hard work and talent over the whole day that was filled with challenges that students had to face together. From problem solving to teamwork, they demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for science and engineering and their creativity and ingenuity, especially our bridge builders who successfully constructed a bridge, tested and re-evaluated their design!
Students have been working on the topic of Algebra since the beginning of the term. Most students have or are close to finishing this unit of work. Those students who have completed the unit have commenced the next unit, titled “Proportion and Coordinate Geometry, and Linear Equations”. This will continue into Term 3.
Medieval Europe – Grade 8 HaSS
Students in Grade 8 HaSS have been studying a unit of work on Medieval Europe, learning about what life during the Middle Ages was like as well as significant events during this time.
Students completed an in-depth analysis of feudalism and social hierarchy and the roles of Monarchs, Nobles, Knights, Vassals, Peasants, and Serfs.
Students completed a comparison task comparing life in the Middle Ages to life today, discussing the similarities and differences between the two time periods.
Students then finished the unit looking at heraldry (the study of coats of arms). They completed their own coat of arms using symbols and colours that represent special aspects of their life and things of importance!
We hope you enjoy some of the wonderful design’s our Grade 8 students created
Child Studies Extended Guest Speaker
On Monday, 27th May, the Child Studies Extended class were lucky enough to have a retired midwife come and speak to them all about midwifery. Keeva shared her educational pathways and how she not only did midwifery in her lifetime, but also nursing, worked with children with disability, in aged care, oncology, theatre and worked with surgeons. During her time as a midwife, Keeva helped to deliver babies as well as educating new parents by running antenatal classes. These classes prepared new mums and dads by teaching them about postnatal care, how to prepare their homes, safe sleeping practices and breastfeeding. She also did home visits to parents of newborns to ensure babies were growing and developing healthily.
Millie T learnt that there are many roles of a midwife.
Milly F learnt about the early days of midwifery.
Adelaide learnt about twin births and how they can get the second baby out.
Chloe R said that the guest speaker has given her an insight about another possible career or pathway for her.
We thank Keeva so much for her time - and also for delivering Mrs Milner's baby nearly 12 years ago!

We are already halfway through Term 2 and our school continues to hum along with students engaged and teachers delivering high quality, engaging tasks that set students up to be successful learners and valued contributors to our school and wider community. I am impressed as I walk around the school each day with how our students adapted to our focus on orderly learning environments. Classes are very settled allowing for both students and teachers to maximise the learning outcomes in all lessons. We take pride in offering our students many opportunities throughout the school year whether it be competitions, presentations, inter-high carnivals, or extracurricular activities. One such extra-curricular activity that the school has supported is a group of Grade 9/10 students who have been travelling to support our feeder Primary schools conduct sporting carnivals, STEM and science activities. I have received excellent feedback from parents and staff from these school on how well our students represented QHS and the mature way in which they worked with the primary school students.
Our Grade 10 students are continuing with their transition to colleges, extension schools or apprenticeships for 2025 with all participating in presentations from both Newstead and Launceston Colleges in the past two weeks. Staff from both colleges commented on how well our students listened and conducted themselves throughout the presentations. This is a credit to the students, and the Grade 10 staff who have worked hard to prepare our Year 10 cohort to be successful in what ever endeavour they choose for 2025.
Kings Meadows Woolworths have been donating fresh fruit to our grade 7 and 8 students on a weekly basis. Our students have thoroughly enjoyed fresh bananas, apples, pears and mandarins at break times which has been a great initiative to promote healthy eating. We really appreciate this support from Woolworths and I would like to extend my gratitude for their generosity.
As the cold weather is well and truly upon us, I would like to remind our parents that we are able to support families in the purchasing of uniform items where necessary. Hoodies, etc are not a part of our uniform and must not be worn under uniforms. We have a range of warm items available to students and these can be purchased at Midford’s in town.
We have a large number of Grade 9/10 students who are undertaking Work Placements this year across a variety of industries. These placements are invaluable to our students in gaining an insight into what it would be like to work in a sector such as building, childcare or hospitality. One aspect that students do need to consider though is that if they undertake a work placement, they must be willing to commit to the entirety of the sessions which are detailed before the placement commences. Students must also be comfortable that they can catch up on any school work missed on the days they are away from school in the workplace.
Research has proven that when students attend school all day and every day, they achieve much better results and give themselves a greater chance of a successful future. School helps students build social and emotional skills such as teamwork, communication and resilience along with developing their academic understanding. Parents need to be aware as well that it is a legal requirement that students attend school. Under the law you must make sure that your child attends school every day unless you have a reasonable excuse. It is very important that you don’t keep your child away from school for minor reasons. You can expect Queechy High School to do the following:
- Monitor student attendance.
- The office will communicate every time your child is absent from school.
- We will follow up on any unexplained absences.
- Provide students with real life authentic experiences to engage them in their learning.
- Work with you around strategies to encourage your child to come to school.
It is really important that if your child is absent from school. you contact the office and provide a reason. If you have any problems with getting your child or children to school, please contact us for advice or support.

Everyone in our school has a role to play in educating students about vaping and the Department for Education, Children and Young People’s (DECYP) is committed to prioritising the health and safety of all children and young people.
DECYP recently worked with the Department of Health to develop an online vaping teaching package.
Teachers, support staff and school health nurses can now access additional online training, classroom resources and lesson plans about the risks of vaping, what the law and regulations are, and how to support someone in quitting.
At our school, we will continue to support your children on by giving them factual information about the impacts of vaping. With these new resources, we will be able to build on this message so students can make informed decisions about their health.
This may lead to more discussions about vaping at home. You might like to have a conversation with your child to help reinforce what they’ve been learning at school.
There are some useful vaping resources and fact sheets available on DECYP’s website aimed at supporting families. The Department of Health’s website is also a good source of health-related information.
